Vasco da Gama (1469-1524) is famous for his completion of the first
all water trade route between Europe and India. In 1497, he followed
Bartolomeu Dias' route to the Cape of Good Hope and continue sailing
into unknown waters along the eastern coast of the African continent.
Vasco da Gama arrived in Calicut, India
on May 20, 1498. Calicut was the principle market of trade for precious
stones, pearls, and spices. The Zamorin of Calicut felt insulted
by the gifts that Vasco da Gama brought, because they were of little
value to him. The Muslim merchants rebeled against the Portuguese.
Finally da Gama left Calicut as quickly as possible.
