Vasco da Gama (1469-1524) is famous for his completion of the first
all water trade route between Europe and India. In 1497, he followed
Bartolomeu Dias' route to the Cape of Good Hope and continue sailing
into unknown waters along the eastern coast of the African continent.
Vasco da Gama departed in August 1498
from India with 170 men and reached Lisbon with only 54 men in September
of 1499. The sailors died of scurvy, epidemic and exhaustion. Some
starved to death. Among the dead was da Gamas brother Paulo.
Da Gama had to burn two ships, because he had not enough sailors.
